The Scent
Khus Mahal is built around khus — vetiver's Indian name and identity, the earthy, cooling root that has scented Indian summers for generations, from khus curtains hung over doorways to khus sharbat served on the hottest afternoons. Here it's paired with a warm, smoky oud, so the cooling green rootiness of vetiver gets grounded by something darker and richer. The result is a room freshener spray that feels both ancient and current — earthy enough to feel authentically Indian, layered enough to feel deliberate rather than raw.
Fragrance as the Doorway
Mahal means palace, and the name is a small nod to how seriously vetiver and oud have been treated in Indian fragrance history — not background scents, but materials worthy of a court. Attardaan is named for the attardaan, the sealed casket that once held a king's own attars, and Khus Mahal, hand-blended in India, is one of our most direct links to that heritage: khus and oud have been distilled and blended by hand in Kannauj, India's 5,000-year-old perfume city, for as long as attar has existed as a craft. The Rig Veda's Śrī Sūkta names Lakshmi Ji as Gandhadvārām, "she whose gateway is fragrance" — the old idea that a scent this rooted in the land can genuinely be how prosperity enters a home.
Where to Use It
Khus Mahal is at its best in the peak of Indian summer, when a cooling, earthy room freshener spray does real work against the heat — spray it in living rooms, verandahs and anywhere ceiling fans are working overtime. It also suits shaded, quieter corners of a home where you want depth rather than brightness — a study, a reading corner, a formal sitting room. Because oud carries weight, this isn't a scent to overuse; two or three sprays is enough to fill a room with its particular cool-and-dark character. Reach for it simply as an air freshener whenever the room needs a quick lift.
Why Attardaan
Hand-blended in India with real khus and oud fragrance oils, Khus Mahal is for anyone who finds citrus-and-floral room sprays too light and wants something with actual roots — literally. We name our scents honestly, by the materials in them, so you know a khus room freshener from an oud room freshener from a blend of both. This one is both, deliberately, and it's one of the more distinctive additions to a home that already knows what it likes. Fragrance is the doorway, and this is the palace version of it.

The Vessel Is You
attardaan
अत्तरदान
noun — the vessel that holds the attar
An attardaan is a real object. Long before it was our name, it was the small ornate box a household kept its perfume in — brought out for weddings, for guests, for the days worth marking. The word says exactly what it is: attar, the fragrance; daan, the holder.
We call the people who wear our scents Attardaans because the name has quietly changed hands. A bottle keeps a fragrance for a while. You give it warmth, a pulse, and somewhere to go. Worn, a scent stops being something you own and becomes something you carry.
In the Rig Veda's Śrī Sūkta, Lakshmi Ji is invoked as Gandhadvārām — she who is approached through fragrance.
The Śrī Sūkta · Rig Vedagandha, fragrance · dvāra, doorway
Which is why, to us, our Attardaans are the most beautiful people we know.

Our Customers Ask
Our fragrances are hand-blended in the traditional attar style using concentrated oils, so they sit close to the skin and unfold gradually over several hours. Wear time varies with skin type, climate and how much you apply — for the best results, apply to pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) on slightly moisturised skin right after a shower.
An attar is a traditional Indian fragrance oil, made the old way and typically alcohol-free, so it's applied directly to the skin and blooms slowly. A perfume (eau de parfum) usually uses an alcohol base, which makes the scent lift faster but fade sooner. At Attardaan, we work in the Kannauj attar tradition — hand-blended, concentrated, and made to last.
Most of our fragrances are crafted in the traditional attar style and are alcohol-free. Composition can vary across our range, so please check the individual product's description for the exact details of the fragrance you're looking at, or message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm before you buy.
Our fragrances are hand-blended using quality ingredients and are generally gentle on the skin. That said, everyone's skin reacts differently to fragrance oils. If you have sensitive skin or a known fragrance allergy, we recommend a small patch test on your inner wrist before applying it more widely.
It depends on how you like to wear your fragrance. A 10ml is perfect for trying a scent, travel, or keeping in your bag for touch-ups. A 100ml is a comfortable everyday bottle for regular use. A 200ml suits someone who's found their signature scent and wants it to last without reordering often. Not sure yet? Start smaller and size up once you know it's the one.
